During 2008 – 2009 a time for European Banks that can only be called a dramatic fiscal period, we received instructions to create the SNS Reaal Fund Annual Report – a fund for the Arts and Culture Foundation of the SNS Reaal Bank and Insurance. After state subsidies were needed for the rescue of several Dutch banks, we felt that modesty seemed apt in terms of the visual elaboration of this document. In contrast to the annual reports of previous years, which were conspicuous by their glossy colour photographs of the Foundations monumental mansion, we proposed a frugal and modest solution.
Seven loose-leaf dossiers are held together by an cover. The only reference to the venerable origin of this report is to be found in the choice of the cover material, namely white linen. The financial support by the Foundation for artistic and cultural projects is no longer relegated to the index at the end of the document, but are displayed on the cover and form the main part of the publication. The artistic and cultural projects which are financially supported by the Foundation are no longer relegated to the index at the end of the document, but are displayed on the cover and form the main part of the publication. The greyish newsprint and grainy graphics add to the feeling of social relevance and urgency.
For this Annual Report, Studio Laucke Siebein is awarded with the ‘Best Dutch Annual Report 2009’. It is also featured in Graphic Magazine, Issue 15 Autumn 2010 and part of the Graphic Design Collection of the Stedelijk Museum Amsterdam.
